About Us

Mohawk College is working to be the most sought after Canadian post-secondary destination for Aboriginal students, renowned for its leadership in the development, implementation, delivery and renewal of Aboriginal academic programming.

Aboriginal Education & Student Services (AESS) relentlessly pursue the development of partnerships and research opportunities with Aboriginal organizations, and, most significantly, contribute to the well-being and quality of life for Aboriginal students.

AESS works directly with the Aboriginal Education Council (AEC) of Mohawk College. We are committed to ensuring the fulfilment of the needs of Aboriginal students through directing the development and delivery of culturally appropriate education and training services. In this role, the AEC has been and will continue to be directly involved with the development and implementation of each initiative submitted for funding. This council is comprised of local Aboriginal community members, institutional partners and stakeholders as well as local Elders and Traditional Knowledge Carriers. Currently, the AEC has representation from the Hamilton Regional Indian Centre, Grand River Employment and Training, Grand River Post Secondary Education Office, New Credit Education Department, Six Nations Polytechnic, the Métis Nation of Ontario, Ogwehoweh Skills and Trades Training Centre and an Aboriginal student from Mohawk College.

The AEC is a sub-group of the Mohawk College Board of Governors and through this body, it reports to the Office of the President. The Aboriginal seat at the Board of Governors is currently filled by Amos Key Jr. Who is also a member of the AEC. In addition, the President of Mohawk College is also a member of the AEC.
